Could Anyone Explain Why So Many Atheists Become Aggressively Slanderous? - David Rosenthal's column on Newsvine

  1. I recently posted an article titled Are Christians Saved?, the stated purpose of which was to discuss with Christians how to convince other Christians to do as Jesus Christ said we should do. The comments were overrun by rabidly arrogant atheists, at least one of who falsely reported to Newsvine that I was threatening them. And as a result Newsvine removed the article, which is now under appeal.

Of course, not all atheists are rabidly opposed to the righteousness of God or the idea of salvation. Many atheists are reasonably well adjusted people who do not attack others for their faith. But many are clearly maladjusted, and they become aggressively slanderous when others who believe in God attempt to discuss their faith, even only among themselves, which they amply evidenced on the page for Are Christians saved?

I was wondering whether anyone could offer explanations of what causes this antisocial phenomenon, and how to deal productively with arrogant slanderers.

No one can believe just because we would like them to believe. But we have a certain obligation to at least attempt to reason with them. However, too many become rapidly aggressive, resorting to sarcastic or bitter slanders. Christ said that when others peresecute us or speak evilly of us for his sake, we are blessed. (Matthew 5:11)

One problem on a site such as this is that when they become overly aggressive, they can flood your article with comments designed to derail civil discussion of the subject of the article.

What is the best way to deal with this problem? And how long should we tolerate their agressiveness and slanders before shaking the dust off of our shoes and blocking their participation?
